Basically I agree with you that he meant it's satisfying to have one's work appreciated and understood. But given that Robert's hardly out of the public eye, it was a curious turn of phrase. That it was also good for David Kaufman's critical perspective to be seen and acknowledged, for example, might be another way of parsing the remark.
